Lisa Metropolis is an abstract painter and professional dog walker living in NYC. Her paintings are rooted in the exploration of the modern human experience.
Her large-scale, abstract paintings use color, shapes, and symbols to express a range of feelings that move throughout her during the creative process.
Some of her works grapple with the impact of ancestral, childhood, and contemporary trauma. Her work calls attention to the historical and systemic silencing of female voices and the suppression of divine feminine energy.
Although these themes are pain-based experiences, the expression of color alludes to a celebration of the resilience and beauty of humanity.
Some early influences that inform her approach include the late 80s early 90s hip hop, punk and hard core scenes. The vibrancy of these counter-cultures along with their commitment to questioning existing structures reverberates in her paintings today.
Furthermore, her ongoing, intimate relationship with the beauty and divinity of nature contributes to her use of a wide-range of colors, textures, and composition.
Lisa has a BA in English, a fashion certificate from the New School, and a certificate in Animal Assisted Therapy from The Animal Behavioral Institute.
She currently works out of her studio in East Harlem NYC.
